Chlorhexidine diacetate is the diacetate salt of chlorhexidine, a cationic broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent belonging to the bis(biguanide) family. With the chemical formula C22H30Cl2N10·2(C2H4O2) and molecular weight of 625.55 g/mol, it is widely used as a disinfectant and topical anti-infective agent. Its mechanism of action involves destabilization of the outer bacterial membrane, leading to cell death. It is effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as some fungi and viruses. Chlorhexidine diacetate has fast and long-lasting effects with extremely low toxicity.
