Chlorhexidine digluconate is the digluconate salt of chlorhexidine, a cationic broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent. It is most commonly supplied as a 20% aqueous solution due to its excellent water solubility compared to other chlorhexidine salts. This formulation makes it highly versatile for various antiseptic and disinfectant applications. Chlorhexidine digluconate acts by binding to cell membrane phospholipids non-specifically, destroying membrane structure and inducing leakage of cell contents. It is effective against bacteria, fungi, and some enveloped viruses.
